Noone will state at this time, but I found this:
"He was sailing, like he was enjoying the ride. He was going at a good clip but wasn't going overly fast," Ms. Ford said.

All local reports inidicate that Ben was travelling at a safe rate of speed, in compliance with speed limits. It was just one of those instances where there wasn't enough time to react even at a safe, sane velocity due to an error in judgement by the driver of the other vehicle.
And depending on all factors of any given situation, a helmet can make an accident more or less harmful. Just like a seatbelt can kill under the right accident conditions.

With motorcycles, anything over 30 mph can be fatal. This is more likely if the rider does not wear a helmet. Full-face helmets provide the most protection because it covers the lower face.

I don't know how fast he was going, but it appears the accident was the fault of the elderly woman who turned in front of him. Perhaps he'll wear a helmet from now on. His coach has warned him in the past about the importance of being safe when riding his motor cycle..

From pics of the motorcycle you'd think he was going fast, but they crumble under anything...if you look at the car, there's only little windshield damage, and over the wheel well. So my guess is he wasn't going that fast. It wasn't him who hit her, it's been said she hit him, but it's all still under investigation, and no charges have been filed.

Nobody's said yet that I've seen, but I was told it had a top speed of 168 mph.
