My mom is getting stressed out because my sister is out of town on a business trip, and there is no one to pick up my nephew (almost 16) from a night class at a community college next Monday. My sister is divorced, and the father says he can't get off work early.

I suggested to my mom that 1) It's my sister's problem. If both parents can't take time off of work, maybe they shouldn't have signed their son up for that class in the first place. As an uncle, I shouldn't have to take the day off to play chauffeur.

2) He is 16. He's 5' 7". There is nothing wrong with teaching a big 16 year old to take the bus home. My mom is worried that it is not safe to take the bus home at night, though I tried to reassure her that it is still light out at 8:30pm this week. She is worried that he is not responsible enough and might miss the bus.

Am I right? My mom (the grandmother) is angry at me for not caring. But I think it's time to teach my nephew how to take care of himself.

He does not have a license because he has no interest in getting one. Plus, his mother doesn't think he is responsible enough to drive or maintain the car appropriately.

I agree he is old enough to jump on the bus and get a ride home. It should also be no one elses responsibility to chauffeur him around besides his parents. Hey why doesn't he have a license?
Its not that your not caring it s just as you said trying to teach responsibility.

i believe it is time for him to be able to get on and off a bus at the appropriate times, i mean, he's 16, most 16 year olds already have a car and go about ok, most of them anyway.

It doesn't matter about your nephew, it matters with the minds of your parents and his parents and what they believe.;)
