folk music typically is based around an acoustic guitar and someone singing, usually about something in the area of social commentary, and sometimes semi-personal, and never aggressive. there was a huge folk music scene in the mid to late 60's. if you want to see a funny parody of folk music (but the clothes and sounds of the music is pretty much dead on) check out the movie "a mighty wind".
