There's a really effective way to do this.

1. Use google or whitepages.com to look up the person's telephone number. This is usually encoded as a ten-digit number, where the first three is an 'area' code and the other seven are a unique identifier.

2. Use VoIP. It's an internet protocol that you can use to communicate with peope over voice using the internet. You'll need that 10-digit number you looked up in #1. Enter it into the VoIP software and wait. When another person answers (It's customary for them to say "hello?") ask them where they work.

Boom--there you go.

Aside from just asking them, your best bet is to use Google and hope the information is out there. But it likely isn't. Any database that would have employer information isn't public (or free).
