sometimes even as young as 10! they're too young to carry those but parents think they should own one "for emergencies" i figured -- that's a good reason. but i suggest they use prepaid (no plan) so they don't go over the minutes. i've had a customer buy her 11-year-old daughter a razr phone. im surprised, but business is business.
also for cingular, they have a special phone for younger kids, where the mother and father's numbers are stored. there are only 2 buttons they can press, one has a picture of a girl, and one has a picture of a boy -- i guess that's safe also -- the kid could not tinker around the phone -- it's for that purpose only.

This millineum age has quite a few cell phones for children 12 and up. Even those children that are 9 and 10.. A lot of families choose a family plan that is cheap and a good way for the child to keep in touch with the Mom or Dad or both. The Parent has to pay for the minutes anyway). Some kids are responsible and some kids are not. In schools they get stolen, lost, loss of privelage, etc. If a 12 and up have one,, it shoud be used properly.:)

I think 12 is a bit young to have a cell phone. My parents would only give us cell phones when we started driving.

Well, here in Germany, kids have cell phones with them in Elementary school. They just have to have them turned off during class. Now that's extreme, but nowadays nothing surprises me anymore.

Yes, and there is one cell phone for Verizon that's designed for kids under 12 year of age. You can get it for free with service from here: http://www.selectivemobile.com/details/LG_Migo_for_Verizon.asp?aid=yh&ref=phone4kids

I plan on getting my daughter a cheap cell phone as soon as she enters kindergarten, just becuase of saftey. She has another year to learn how to use one properly and take care of it. It of course, would be a restricted use phone, only given to her when needed.

Yeah, sadly enough, children are getting cell phones. Of course, they're in mom and dad's name, but still. I don't think children need them until they get a job or start driving.

get a job, and you can get a phone. But, you cannot enter into a contract until you're 18, so you can't get service

yes, they can have them. i am not sure if they can sign up for them on their own, but in general their parents pay for the phones (a bit excessive in my opinion).
