i drive a 2003 ford focus. the fan in the ventillation system arbitarily cuts out. if i leave it in the ON position for long enough after it gives out, it emmits this really acrid, foul odor. but if i turn it off and wait a bit, it turns right back on. it will work anywhere from a couple seconds to a couple hours. is this a known problem for this year/make/model? i'm hoping it's an easy fix. any suggestions to what could be causing this?

On some smaller cars when you accelerate your A/C will cut out to provide extra power when needed and then kick back in when the unneeded power isnt(going uphill, passing a car or hard acceleration and then slowing back down) As for the smell maybe your water vent hole up under the hood next to the windshield is clogged and the moisture is sitting there and just like water standing is fowl water and you need to find the drain hole and unstop it with a piece of wire or a stick

ok, it sounds like you have something stuck in the fan, the smell you smell is the motor being stuck and starting to burn up, as soon as you smell that turn off the fan. it looks to me like your blower motor is going out,
