Indonesia is on the boundary of the Asian Plate and the Indian-Austrailian Plate. This boundary is a transform fault (or a strike-slip fault). It is roughly the same type of fault as the San Andreas Fault in Califormia. Java just happened to be where the focal point of the earthquake occurred. It was an unlucky event for them.
