Yes. Taking too much of anything can hurt your body. There are two types of vitamins: water-soluble vitamins and fat-soluble vitamins. If the vitamin is water-soluble (e.g. vitamin C), it would take a lot of it to hurt your body, because it dissolves in water and will be excreted during urination. However, if the vitamin is fat-soluble, it will be absorbed into your fat and remain in your body for a while. Too much of a fat-soluble vitamin will be toxic. That's why you should follow the "percentage of recommended daily intake" label on the side of the bottle.

Most vitamins are water soluble... anything you don't use gets flushed out...
A few are fat soluble... your body will store the extra, even to the point that they can start building up and giving health problems... even becoming toxic.
A "variety" of vitamins is exactly what your body needs. If you follow the RDA with the usual over the counter multi-vitamins (Centrum, One-A-Day, etc) you won't have anything to worry about.
If you start wanting to go beyond that, like taking extra b-vitamins for nerves, extra c for immune system, and supplements of calcium and magnesium for bones and digestion, then talk to your doctor or a nutritionist. You may even want to get blood tests to find out if you actually need any of that before you go spending your money on them.
Hope this helps...

I believe that when your body needs minerals and calcium and such, the best way to get it is from food. When you take vitamins to replace what you lack in your diet, your body begins to only accept those pills and will reject the food source of vitamins. If your diet is that unhealthy to the point that you need a variety of pills to keep you in good health, you should probably change what you eat and the way you eat. Try eating more of the foods that contain the minerals and vitamins your body is craving instead of using a capsule as a substitute.

Some times one type of vitamin may prohibit the body's ability to absorb another type of vitamin. This creates an excess of minerals in the body and can sometimes cause different problems such as, kidney, bladder and liver problems. Other than that, I think as long as a person researches their vitamins really well, they should be OK in taking whatever they want....:D

Yes, it can. Your body can only absorb a certain percentage of vitamins daily. For instance, an overdose of Vitamin A is fatal. Your liver cannot process it quickly enough, your skin turns orange and the vitamin essentially poisons your body.

Too many vitamins can hurt you. If you smoke, there is a certain B vitamin that you should not take, it can actually kill you over time. Be carefull, and make sure you talk to your doctor.

Certain vitamins can be harmful when taken in excess...one of them can cause vision problems that can be permanent. Take what is necessary as properly recommended and don't waste your money trying to overdue something with either no value or serious side effects.

Yes, a person that I used to work with claims he messed up his health by taking vitamins and that it took him years to get straightened back out again.
