I just want to know does magazine such as Vogue, cosmopolitan etc etc go to every shops or sites to search for products they like or they think is good to put into their magazines or some owners of the products will go to the editor or the magazine team to ask them to put their products in? I don't mean in the advertisement page or area.

Magazines like Vogue and Cosmo are notorious for plugging expensive goods, not because they work well... rather it's because a lot the time it's a two-way street when it comes to cross-promoting. The cosmetics, clothes, and ladies' shoe industries rely on consumers who read the magazines because they cover a large demographic (especially Cosmo because it's international) and the magazines rely on those people who write letters and say, "Hey, I tried this product on Page 8 and I told all my friends about it. Thanks!"

Have you ever noticed that a lot of the makeup featured in the "Must Have" sections are from high end companies like Chanel, Clinique, Max Factor, and Shiseido that only market their products in swanky department stores like Macy's and Bloomingdales? They're not cheap, but a lot of slaves to fashion are quick to run out and get the "Must Have" du jour just because the model wearing the product in the photo spread made it look appealing to the general public.

Product placement is a hot new method of marketing. Check out product placement, for example, in movies today - they pay big bucks for the opportunity to be featured. Magazines get information, products, etc. all the time from marketing firms, PR firms, and companies directly. In addition, press releases frequently go to magazines that are in their demographics. And magazines want to keep their advertisers loyal, and so will often request articles, information, and prodcuts from them.
Only magazines like Consumer Reports don't take money for product information.

Magazines publishers are constantly being sent product samples, "news" articles (which are just thinly veiled advertisements) and other copy from individual product manufacturers and marketing companies. Most of what you read in these magazines are what the aforementioned companies consider "free advertising" because that's all it really is even if it isn't labeled advertising. Even the "help full" stories are just another form of advertising. In fact there are some good books written that show that even entertainment and news shows on TV are considered just "filler" between the commercials.

Search out the publication you want your product to be in, then find the editor of that particular product line. If you are not sure contact the publisher, or managing editor, they will talk to you or have a representative speak with you. Many magazines are in a group published by the same company, if you don't fit in one they may find a fit for you elsewhere.

This is what marketing research is for? Why you get phone calls (surveys) asking you your age, sex, interests, etc. These are put into databases and weighed against odds. Magazines and other media want to know their "target audience" and their "share" of the market. Random surveys allow them to find out.

If you have a product that will meet the interests of the magazine's target audience, and therefore, get them to purchase the magazine, why wouldn't the magazine be interested in you and your product?

All magazines have a research team that goes out to find items they want displayed in their magazine. I'm sure that a person could send in a product they would like displayed but it would be a hard sell.

Many manufacturers send out their newest products to magazine researchers for "testing and evaluation" and after the people test it or try it for a while then they will write a rating article about it. Sometimes these articles get published and sometimes they get cut down to just a rating in a chart someplace.

If you have a good product, send some free samples to magazines that normally highlight new products similar to yours and ask them for their honest evaluation.

If you are unsure of who to send your new product to for evaluation, contact the company first and ask them for the name and mailing address of their product evaluation person/people.

Go through some magazines that have reviewed products similar to your own. By similar, you should consider what overall categories your product might fall into. For example, if you make unique handbags, they might be reviewed by women's magazines, travel magazines, specialty-shopping (bargain hunters) magazines because it's not only an item of interest in the fashion industry, but also in the everyday lives of women and is used in the transport of particular items as the users go from one place to another (like luggage). Another example: if you specialize in custom-designed hankies the market shifts a bit. Handkerchiefs are a nostalgic item, but often used by grooms, older men, and decorators / party-organizers. Patients in cancer treatment and those in the entertainment industry would be other demographics that reach out for the handkerchief. Really know your own product and its many uses / appeal audience.

As you go through magazines, focus on products similar to your own or in the same type of categories (or uses) as your product. Write down the bylines (names of the writer-reviewers) and send your product to the magazines reviewing products similar to yours in care of the writer-reviewers that might consider reviewing your product. If they like it, they'll want to share their 'new find' with the world.

Contact the different magazines. Hopefully they will find your product interesting enough to do an article on it. Another option is to pay them to advertise.

The owners will ask the magazine company to put certain pictures in for them and then they get paid.
