I'll take Bobby Orr, the man changed the way the game is played and would have been even better if he could have played longer. Not that the Great one but remember the Oilers won a cup without him and the Bruins haven't won since Orr left

Wayne Douglas Gretzky, OC (born January 26, 1961) is a former professional ice hockey player and is currently part-owner and head coach of the Phoenix Coyotes. Born in Brantford, Ontario and nicknamed "The Great One," Total Hockey: The Official Encyclopedia of the NHL calls Gretzky "the greatest player of all time". [1] He is regarded as the best player of his era and has been called "the greatest hockey player ever" [2] by sportswriters, [3] [4] [5] players, [6] coaches, and fans. Along with his many awards and achievements, he is the only player to ever have his playing number, 99, officially retired across the entire National Hockey League.

Bobby Orr. I know Gretzky tops most lists, but if you ever have a chance to see this guy play on a tape, take advantage and watch. He skated like nobody else could. He could make Hall of Famers look like first-timers and goalies look fools. Not only was he amazing to watch, but he also managed 915 points in 657 games. And this isn't a forward I'm talking about; he was a defenseman. He also played on bad knees. There will never be another one like him.

Center Wayne Gretzky
Left Wing Mark Messier
Right Wing Mario Lemieux (Even though he was also a center man he did start his career as a right winger)
Defense Nicolas Lidstrom
Defense Ray Bourque
Goaltender Ken Dryden, Martin Brodeur, Patrick Roy, it's a tough call.
I think the the best skater was Pavel Bure, the toughest guy in the league was Essa Tikkanen, the probably the most hated was someone like Claude Lemieux. My personal favorite was Cam Neely, he could do everything the game demanded, and he could do it better than just about everybody else. I liked how he was never the best at any one thing, but he was great at everything.

It is difficult to say who has been the best player in history as there are differences in the game now from when many players played. I would say the 2 best hockey players in history are Gordie Howe and Wayne Gretzky. Both hold many unbelievable records and Howe played hockey in 5 different decades. That was quite an accomplishment! He did not get the opportunity to play in as many games each year as Gretzky did, but both players are/were unbelievable!

pretty touchy subject man, Orr changed the way the D position was palyed and brought the ideals of what a d man should be to a new level.
Gretzky on the other hand, has brought the game to a whole new level throughout the world. He is easily recognizeable anywhere he goes and for good reason.
He was the hardest working talented player ever to grace the rink. His skill is unsurpassed by anyone and his desire to be the best is well above anyone else who ever played the game.
Hands down it's Gretzky.

Thats just my opnion though.

Well of course statistically it's Gretzky. But I've had the opportunity to watch many greats being an Avs fan. Borque and Blake on defense. Patrick Roy in goal.. But the skater I think is the best is Peter Forsberg. Two Gold medals, two stanley cups, nobody skates and handles the puck better or makes a better pass..

Mario Lemieux - no contest. Through cancer, back surgeries, hip surgeries he kept going. Kemo in the morning, a goal and 2 assists in the evening. A points per game average that not even Wayne could touch, and all done with not so great teams. Start the season half way through with the leading scorer having 51 points, but won the season scoring title by 12 points. If he had a healthy career like Wayne there would only be one name in the record books!!!

Gretzky was the best player to ever come along. He was the most dominant player for the longest time.He knew when it was time to retire and didnt come out of retirement like alot of athletes do.He always remained humble and caring both about the game the players and the fans. The guy you see behind the oilers bench singing the anthems is one special fellow that i had the chance to meet while attending a charity golf tournament Gretzky was holding for him.It was nice to see him still around seeing as the tournament was in 1988 0r 86 .
