The Director's Cut of "The Exorcist"!
Or Labyrinth.
OH!!! THE RATS OF NIMH!!!
Do check that one out, it's a great story for kids, it has a good plot, and a twist at the end, and it will get them thinking on top of all that....

What about some of the older flicks like, The Ghost and Mr. Chicken with Don Knotts. Thats a great one for kids!
To Kill a Mockingbird would be my first choice..Its black and white and about young kids and a mystery.. There are some scary parts for a child, like when Scout is walking home from the school play, And all the mystery around "BOO"
Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, the original version with Betty Davis. Scared me enough when I was a kid;
For modern scary films someone mentioned Gremlins. I think that would be appropriate but expect some tears with ET.
Do not under any circumstances show them Exorcist.

If they're already OK with some of the mildly scary scenes in children's movies, such as the witch scene in Snow White or the shark scene in Finding Nemo, you might try some of the superhero movies like Batman, Spiderman, etc. They have some villians that could be a little scary but probably not nightmare material. If they've already seen those, maybe some sci-fi would do the trick.

The first horror movieis I remember watching were these dodgy 70's - 80's films called Hammer House of Horror & Murder Mystery Suspense films made for the TV. They weren't scary for me.
By the time I was 8 yrs old I had watched The Exorcist, Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, Friday 13th, The Evil Dead, Wicker Man, Dawn of the Dead & a lot of old 70 - 80's horror movies. The only one that really freaked me out was The Exorcist, the others however scary they were visually and jumpy didn't give me nightmares!

Actually at that age I found ET to be terrifying, I was scared to death of the guy with the keys cause I thought he was going to kill ET. Labrynth might work, muppets are frightening. Other than that, there is the Black Cauldron. It is an animated movie from Disney, but very frightening to small children. Also somehting like Ernest Scared Stupid, or Ernest Halloween. Those sound stupid, but the Halloween one is all about kids being kidnapped and absorbed by some kind of troll monster.

first make sure they are ready for scary movies. i think the 8 year old will be fine but you may want to wait for the six yr old one. these kinda things can scar them for life so i wouldn't do anything too scary if your going to let the six year old watch. for the eight maybe batman begins or the village isn't too scary probably any m.night films would be good.lord of the rings that's all i can think of right now.

Don't take them to any scary movies it will just create fear for them, I was never taken to scary movies by my parents and now I never take my daughters to scary movies, with such great movies for children out there, there is no point in taking them to scary movies in my opinion.

Why don't you take the to see "Monster House"? It's coming out on July 21st 2006.
Story Plot:
Although no adults will believe them, three children realize a neighbor's house is really a monster. They must find a way to stop the house and save the neighborhood.

It'll allow them to go with all the other kids in the theater and will be twice as fun! I take my nephews and neices to every kid's movie that comes out and we all can't wait for this one :)
