There are several reasons. One is to impress their friends. Another is insecurity. Some times it's cultural. It all has to do with control.
The question you have to answer for yourself is, how much control am I going to give this person over me?

Not all men are like this. My ex was, but my fiance is not. He knows that I rule the roost and if he gets out of line, HE is the one in trouble. lol Actually, we share the authority/rules, etc. If you and your mate love, trust, and respect each other, you will share the authority. One will not dominate the other. Someone who tries to keep their partner in c heck is insecure, an abuser, and wants/needs control over the other person. This should never be allowed.

Men natually have to dominate, but the woman is the one who lays down boundries. If she likes to be dominated he will do it, if not then they won't.
