You drag the hoe towards you across the weeds to cut them off at ground level. Sometimes you have to use some downward force. When selecting a hoe, make sure you get one that has a sharpened edge on it or put an edge on it yourself. It will work much better.

If you seriously don't know- you "chop" into soil bring hoe slightly towards you. Practice and come up with best results. It is good for cut down weeds, especially while small, and "raking" soil to hill up potatoes, corn, ect. Just get your hands on it and try different strokes.

for breaking up ground, i turn mine on a slight angle and use the edge. for cutting weeds let blade lay flat on the face and angled up toward u, and with short 2-4 inch strokes jerk the hoe back toward u and lift.
