Teddy Bears were created by a toy maker as a gift for Theodore Rosevelt (sp?) after the news of his latest bear hunting adventure came out. It became all the rage.
Over time they bears were transformed to match the facial charateristics of a baby. Big forehead and eyes, small nose. Studies show that people are naturally attracted to these features (one of natures way of making us keep our kids.)

If it were not a bear, it still would be another animal, so forget the fact that it is A BEAR. Now, the 'Teddy bear' was made ever more popular with the creation of the Theodore Roosevelt teddy. Ever since, it has been a part of american history, like Raggedy Anne, and Mr. Potato Head.
It is a universally common ideal gift, reaching more out to women by slightly more than men. It can be a gift for any one person, for they come in so many arrays of color, texture, and specific event. A graduation bear, wedding set, get well soon,.....the bear is for everyone because it was made to reach out to everyone.

I think it's the bear because people may enjoy the fantasy of being able to cuddle and actually be in the presence of a bear without an attack. The images of stuff bears are cute. And owning a stuff teddy is traditional in America, especially by small children and pretty girls like myself.

The grizzly canadian bear was the first to get stuffed,ie, it was
used by folks of yonder years by stuffing waste cloth/skins etc in
a bag, and used by kids to keep warm, and play with it too.And since the bag looked ugly, someone thought of a novel idea to make it look like a bear.
Added to it was buttons for eyes, as buttons are always everywhere available.Ever experienced the bitter cold of the canadian ranges? You`d not only freeze, your thinking would get so fuzzy, you`d stop asking such questions.
