I had rats, too, and it amazes me how many people can have a hamster or gerbil, yet don't appreciate rats. They, unlike the other rodent pets, are wonderful, friendly, intelligent animals. Sadly, they live much too short of a life.
There are still times when I miss them - like when eating dinner out and not having anyone at home who will appreciate a yummy pile of pork bones or some cold french fries. I always loved the weird looks from the waitress when I'd ask for a doggy bag for bones or some other "garbage." Then, the even weirder look when I explained that it was for my pet rats.
Over time, those thoughts will make you smile instead of cry. Instead of feeling bad because they're gone, you'll simply be reminded of what made you love them.
Search the net for a copy of the poem "The Rainbow Bridge." It will make you feel better.

Of course people do. I lost both of my pet cats that i grew up with about 3 years ago and i still cry about them sometimes. But this can mean that your pet meant so much to you that you dont want to let them go and im sure your pets would love to be back with you too. And i know what you mean about losing a family member, but just think that they are still alive, in your heart i know that that is sometimes the only thing that keeps me going.

Definitely! My first cat, Nugget, was a black and white tuxedo short-hair. (I called her Nugget as, when I adopted her, she was a cute little nugget of kitty-cat. :-) ) She shared her life with me for four short years. Then the thoughtlessness of some workmen in my apartment let her get outside for two days. Shortly after she returned, it was apparent that she was sick. To make a long story short, I had to have her put to sleep.) Even now, some ten years later, I am still affected by her loss.
Losing an animal companion can be just as devastating as losing any other family member or loved one. People who say things such as, "It was just an animal", have never truly bonded with a fuzzy person, and they have my pity.
Bringing a cat or dog into our lives also means having to deal with their passing, as few cats and dogs outlive their humans. But we still have the warm memories of our four legged family members and all the love and joy they brought into our lives.

Losing even a pet is losing a friend. You may never get over it. I lost a dog about 6 years ago and when I think of him; I cry.
They are your family and give you unconditional love. All they ask in return is food, water, love and attention.
Just remember the good times and memories that you had with your pet and believe that there is indeed a "Rainbow Bridge", and when we cross over we will meet all of our furry friends there to live and romp in a world without pain and worry and you will be reunited again.

Yes, when I think about my childhood cat it still makes me sad, and he died a long time ago. I had him from when I was five until I was twenty. I loved him so much and still have his picture on my dresser. It's ok to be sad and miss them. This sounds silly but try to remember the good times, that they played and were happy and loved members of the family.

I totally understand where you are coming from, a couple of years ago, I had a cat, named Dae Dae, I lived in a one bedroom apt, and had the windows that were to the floor and were vertical. I went to close the window and he jumped in there and the window slammed on his head. I called 911, rushed him to the nearest clinic, there was nothing they could do. His skull was crushed and he was barely alive. I didnt not stop crying about it for months, I still think about it and get tears, it was so sad. But you didnt kill your cat, like me, if I ever lost the cat I have now, Bo, I would never stop crying, he is like my kid, it is pretty bad. Everyone makes fun of me. It will get easier.

I have not had to go throughthis yet. but I can only imagine that it is normal. I have a chihuahua, who has been with me for six and a half years. This boy does not leave my side.. He comes to work with me everyday and sleeps under my desk. i do not go on vacation unless he can go. I even snuck him in the hospital when I was giving birth to my little boy! ha. He is juat like my child and I would grieve just as much as if a real human passed away too. We grow to love them as parts of us and it has to be extreamly difficult. Time may help to heal wounds but we will never forget about them..

Yes, It's completely normal to miss a beloved pet and cry if you are sad. It should only be a sometimes thing tho. If you are depressed and missing out on life, you should seek therapy.
