My computer screen went to a black screen with a bunch of information on it and I cant go to my desk top, etc. The only information that shows an error was "Primary Master Hard disk S.M.A.R.T. status Bad. I put the start up disk in and it gives me an error of "file serial .sys is corrupted" can anyone tell me what this could be??

Self Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology. This is a monitoring system, which stores all errors, retries, and power on hours. Computers with S.M.A.R.T. enabled help you monitor a drive's internal status through diagnostic commands. In order for S.M.A.R.T. to report if a drive has failed, it must be enabled as a system option. Drive should be replaced.
If you have a Drive utility on your computer, then you should find out what is wrong with your drive and get a report of your Drive's condition.

You might need to replace your drive.

"My system BIOS reports something like "Primary Master HDD S.M.A.R.T. status bad"

Backup your data and important files immediately! This is an indication that one of your hard disks is physically failing. Anytime a SMART message pops up, the general consensus is - replace the HD ASAP. SMART is usually an early-warning of impending HD failure. The sooner you replace it the better.

As for serial.sys:

Serial.sys

Serial implements the Serial service. Serial is used as:

• A function driver for legacy COM and Plug and Play COM ports Note that a COM port provides a 16550 UART-compatible interface.

• A lower-level device filter driver for a Plug and Play serial device that requires a 16550 UART-compatible interface An example of this configuration is a serial device on a PCMCIA card.

Serial's operation as a filter driver is identical to its operation as a function driver.

Serial features the following:

• Plug and Play, power management, and Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI)

• Power policy owner for a serial device stack that includes Serial

• Supports an unlimited number of standalone COM ports and multiport boards

• Controls interrupts and communication with device hardware

There should have been an error code with the messasge...and knowing your Operating System and the code would be helpful.

I'd haul my computer to a repair facilty, like COMP USA before you cannot get into your computer at all. But, most important, remember to back up those important files!

There re many things that could cause this such as a power spike, surge or outage. Turn off the computer, leave it off for a few then restart. if it is still not working you may have a hard drive that went bad, try starting in safe mode (command prompt) type chkdsk c:/r to check and attempt repair of drive. if you still have the issue you may need to replace the drive - contact me if you still re having a problem and we can dive deeper into it. . .
