i downloaded a site which i thought was safe, and at time had switched off my norton security sysyem. i now have this porn site which pops up as soon as i open the browser, and get message"page cannot be displayed". This also happens when i try to open otther sites, and i have tried many ways to remedy this by trying to access a site that will scan and repair my system for free. I may be being naive? but every site i have visited for "free",ends the same way! the scan is free, but to get rid of the virus,i have to register, and purchase the item. If this is how its done? would welcome any recomendations for a product that i can purchase from my PC store. Many thanks if u can help.

You can also download Microsofts free Windows Defender from the official Microsoft site.
The Windows firewall doesn't stop malware on your pc from dialling out. Either of these firewalls are free for personal use and stop unwanted incoming and outgoing traffic. You choose which programs are
allowed to access the internet. They are both fairly easy to use and updated regularly.

Yes online scan just gives the result, it does not remove the virus/spyware.
From you explanation i guess that it is not a virus, it must be a spyware. There are many free anti spyware s/w.
Try spybot, MS defender(Have to validate your WInXP before downloading) or AdWare.
These are pretty good and free too.

I can't eblieve you fell for that trick. *sighs*
Here's 2 programs that work fr me.
1. Spybot Search and Destroy
2. Ewido Security Suite
Do a google search on those 2. I think one or both of them are free for the simple-yet-watered-dwn versions. Check them out!

Firstly, it's not a virus so the antivirus recommendations above are not going to remove it.
It's called spyware/malware. The easiest removal program is going to Ad-Aware SE Personal or Ewido.

Avast is a good thorough alternative to AVG at www.avast.com. Also makes sure you have adaware SE available from www.lavasoft.com as that will get rid of any nasty adware you might have, always keep your virus scanner and firewall on! Best firewall is still zonealarm. Get rid of Norton, its crap!
