As a Canadian I like that USA people are called Americans so that they are not confused with us Canucks.

It IS the United States of America. Any country in the Americas could call themselves Americans, if they desired.
What alternative? U.S.ians?

Just like the people's republic of China, people are chinese, People from the United States of America ar called Americans.

Canadians prefer to call themselves just that... Mexicans, likewise. The term is too broad a term to differentiate among the many peoples in the "America del Sur." Technically, the whole of the western hemishere "qualifies," but the citizens of the US have little other option if they are to refer to themselves as something other than United State-ians... does this make sense?

Because the US is the United States of America, so Americans is common sense. Oddly though....America wasnt named for a discoverer, but after a ship mate on a ship coming over...his name was amerigold vespuchi or something like that.

Most people in South America call themselves Americans, and call people from USA Northamericans. So not everywhere we understand the same when we talk about the Americans.
America was named after the Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci, and not after a ship's name as somebody post.

"American" is derived from "America". Get it? Not much different than called a person from "Germany" a "German".

the usa is a part of a continent -north america but its people still call themselves americans while we have the poor canadians & mexicans living on the same continent.also the citizens of south american countries (yeah the banana republics !)refer to themselves likewise.........Goes to show who is the boss doesn't it?
