Personally James Hefield, but you are talking about two different decades and type of music. I am a rock fan. James survived burns all over his body from the concert over seas. He has been through rehab he can write heavy metal songs and also ballads like nothing else matters. He's also down to eartha nd not afraid to confront the other members of his band (lars) and has been through the death of a band Mate (Cliff) and is still making music.

As a pure guitar player, from the technical standpoint I think James Hetfield is a better player. He had some very brilliant passages in Metallica's early days (the Ride The Lightning and Master of Puppets days). However, Metallica as a whole, including him hasn't produced anything important for a looooong time now (From the Black album on, in my opinion), and so, as a musician, in terms of their contribution to rock, I'd have to give the nod to David Gilmour (Pink Floyd has just contributed more to music than the*cough*SELLOUT*cough* Metallica has).
