Since he'll be playing it, and not you, ask yourself this instead: is the fulfillment of my boyfriend's birthday request worth $250? After all, he's getting it for free, and so even if it's only worth $25 dollars to him, for him it's still "worth it."
Also ask yourself this: if I buy this for my boyfriend, and he doesn't use it much, will I regret spending the $250? After all, $250 is a lot of money. Heck, I'm 35 years old and make six figures, and I won't spend that kind of money on what is essentially a toy. I certainly wouldn't want to spend it on someone who might not really appreciate it.
Here's another good question: if I buy this for my boyfriend, and he breaks up with me shortly thereafter, will I regret spending that much money on him? The reverse is also good to ask: if I don't buy this for my boyfriend, am I afraid he'll break up with me, and if so why am I dating someone who wants me for my money instead of me?
At the end of the day, think of the PSP as an autographed picture of a baseball player (or something else you have no interest whatsoever in) -- and so judge the merits of this gift on how much you spend vs how much your boyfriend deserves that kind of outlay, regardless of what the outlay is for.

My boyfriend got a PSP when they first came out...and traded it in about 3 or 4 months later. It's really cool watching movies on it, but he didn't like any of the game they had. If you like the game available for the PSP...then get it...if not...don't.

Get the psp . Try to find one at version 1.5 and dont upgrade the firmware on it. Then you can have some real fun. You can put videos on it , music , it has a built in web broswer(2.5 and higher) and you can put your own games on it

Yea, it does tons of stuff. Not only for music and videos but he can hook up to the internet with it and use it like a computer. It really is a cool gadget.

No. you won't buy that many games (they're like $50) with that money, you might as well buy an Ipod video.

No.
It does a lot of stuff but all of the features are half baked.
You'll like it for a week then use it as a paper weight.
