why do sharks open their mouths so wide??

To make a wider bite on the prey ... it is the way their jaws are hinged that allows them to do it.

Why did you post this question under "pets"...i'm scared.
Sharks open wide because they CAN.
They have gills, and all the water runs out thru there.
So the only thing left in their mouth is food.
They're like a sieve, a big strainer or net.
It's a pretty efficient design, it's why sharks are one of the few creatures that have been around unchanged since prehistoric times.

Sorry, seriously, they catch all those little fishes that hang around in groups (called schools) so the wider the mouth, the more fish to get in at once. Like how we use a net; the bigger the net, the more fish.

Bigger bite as they don't chrew and easier kill, as easier to catch and do more damage... Pretty easy would you be better of with a little bit or bitten in two?

well a lot of sharks will try eat things that are bigger than them self..
and u will find that they do it a lot after they eat as well.
