The term Superpower is a political one. Power comes in many forms. Now, the battle rages in the economic world. America is a superpower in that world, and will remain one beyond ten years from now. Europe will become an economic superpower, as will China and maybe Russia, if it can stabilize its political and judicial systems and overcome the current level of corruption and economic depression. India, Brazil, and the "Union of South American Nations" might be superpowers in the next 50 years.
The status of 'Superpower' will be lost by the USA in the next 50 years as the loss of fundamental natural supports begin to take effect. These natural supports and the hard work of the American people have lifted America to its present position. When they come to an end, America will lose the strength that has led it thus far. These fundamental supports are:
1. Agricultural productivity. This fundamental support is using up the supplies of ground water that accumulated since the last melt of the ice age. This water is only replaced by rain and snow fall. But the water is being taken out of the ground faster than nature can replace it. When it is gone, a new 'dust bowl' will occur in the most productive heartland of America. Farmers will abandon the land and seek employment elsewhere. A new depression will occur and the economy will collapse.
2. Natural resources. The use and over-use of natural resources now extends into the arctic circle. At some point there will not be enough left to feed the mass market. The rate of consumption will fall since there will be fewer products to buy. Prices will rise since companies will try to maintain their workforce at current levels. But increases in productivity will not be possible since there will be shortages of key natural materials such as copper.
3. The education system will continue to improve. The spectrum of education systems now ranges to chaotic inner city disaster areas, to outstanding, brilliant educational systems. One of the events will force America to realize that education is the only answer to the problems of the future and real money will be poured into education. Personalized Education might become a real possibility, enabling students to become the best they can be, not just the best that the society needs.
4. The US Dollar will continue to be the world's strongest currency, because most of the world wants it to be. The problems re this question is that too many dollars will be held by groups of corporations outside of America. They will buy up as much of the real estate in America as they can. They will become more and more powerful, and outside the control of American internal laws. This will blur what America is and what it means to be an American. The international corporations will become more and more powerful politically.
5. In finance, the power will shift to international banking alliances without patriotic ties to America. Their goal will be to make money and if that means America will be poorer for it, they won't care. They won't care if any country is hurt by their policies as long as they make money.
6. In technology, short sighted American corporations will export technology to China in hopes of increasing profits. Corporations in China, many of which are half owned by the Chinese government, will share technology freely - against the intellectual property rights of the patent holders - and the overall growth of Chinese technology will surpass that of the US. China will land men on the moon. America will probably give up any hope of landing men on Mars. The exploration of outer space will be left to robots. America will not be the only nation sending robots to Titan's moons and the asteroids in hopes of finding a vast wealth of natural resources there.
7. The value that America attaches to each soldier's life will remain high. In order to provide US soldiers with the best weapons, the R&D into weapon technology will remain high. The reason American weapon technology is the best in the world is simply because Americans love to fight, and hate to die. If a better weapon will let them fight, and let the other side die, then almost no price is too high to pay for it. American companies will continue to produce the highest quality weapons in the world, even if they are actually made in other countries. The combat capability of the US soldier will be at the highest possible money can buy. Robot and high altitude unmanned weapons will make it possible to kill a person, a vehicle, a town, a city, or a nation anywhere in the world. As terrorists increase their use of violence against America, the motivation to fight back will drive R&D to new levels of precision regarding who, and where a terrorist is. Skynet is a real possibility. I hope that the robots are not equipped with WMD's.
Americans have a lot of money. There are going to be over 300 million Americans soon. These people buy goods from all over the world. The average worker makes almost $20 an hour. Of course their union leaders say it is not enough, that the CEO is taking too much etc etc. But the Chinese worker is getting $100 A MONTH. This is where all the wealth is coming from. And this is why Americans are envied by other workers. But Chinese workers are not stupid. As they make more money, they buy more goods. If you know about the Law of Supply and Demand, you know what will happen as Chinese workers make more money. Prices for what they buy will go up. The world is pushing the supply side as hard as it can already. It is not easy to increase the supply of oil or copper. If Chinese people get 1 more dollar a month, that is 12 billion more dollars to spend. If American people get 1 more dollar a month that is 3 or 4 billion more dollars to spend. At some point, the Chinese people will want to buy all the stuff that Americans want to buy, but there are so many more Chinese that they will be able to outbid ANYONE to get what they want. This means they will buy up the oil, the copper, the cement, the aluminum, the rubber, etc etc etc.
So, in the next ten years, China will become an economic superpower.
Is the US smart enough to maintain its place as a super power for 10 years? Yes. But the other supports that are necessary to a superpower... natural resources, a strong agricultural base, a productive workforce... Some of these things are not going to be possible in the long run unless the American people change some fundamental consumption habits.

I believe it will be an Asian or Pacific rim Alliance.
Look at the facts, the students in the Asian countries excel at academics, where most American students are want ta be pro ball players, thugs, rappers or some other pie in the sky, load of crap. Brains is what fuels a superpower, and the US of A has been slipping sense the late 80's. We as a nation have become a fast food eating - lazy remote using - energy consuming - don't know nothing - bunch of 'tards. Heck, most don't even think for themselves anymore. Is is sad when the newspapers have had to be 'dumbed' down for the the reading level of the average consumer. and have you looked at the waste of magazines that appeal to the 3rd and 4th grade (reading level) adults, mostly pictures. Now I won't even discuss the work ethics of the upcoming generation. And just where did the idea that the Government OWES you come from?????
This is part of why the US of A will not be a superpower soon. We are becoming a nation of dolts. ( No I didn't miss spell adults, I meant "dolts"!)

The USA after sucking all of it's natural resources completely dry will force Canada into some sort of union as Canada is natural resource rich and America is technology and weapons rich, they don't allow other countries to get more advanced then they are. As soon as anyone else has an inkling of advancement US of A are the first ones there to set the record straight! Maybe the rest of the world will take a stand and form some sort of United Nations that Americans would actually have to adhere to.

Through an act of God, an uncanny two-way alliance between Liechenstein and Palau. ;o)
More seriously (barring no drastic changes in the status quo), the next decade will probably see bipolarity between the West (with the EU being the most influential) and the Nonaligned Movement (with India being the most influential).
America will take a much needed break from acting from its self-appointed position as "policeman of the world," if only because a burgeoning national debt will require it. China and Russia will act as 'swing states' between the two 'superpowers', so to some extent those two countries will wield a considerable amount of power themselves.

Good chance it will be China. The baby-boomers retirement bill will consume most of the governments assets. Even though both sides of the aisle know that the funds can't go into a locked box, because it would kill the country's economy. If we don't find away to change the economics of Renewable Energy, we will not have the energy to keep the life style going we presently enjoy. We use energy both to make us more productive and to use the products we make requires energy. We can't hog all the energy. We have to share it or we can't sell our toys.

There are no super powers and never were.
It is an illusion.
The world works in spite of the so-called super powers.
You want super powers, try big business, Christianity, Islam, survival. Those are powers that are fighting everyday to control the world in all its many facets.
Forget about patriarchal lines of demarcation and focus on the larger picture. Entities now play on a global front. They shape the world. We act accordingly.
I included survival in the list because it is the greatest of all motivators. It acts with no objective other than itself.
Think about it.

Russia, they have been keeping quiet and to themselves for a while, and you know what they say about the quiet ones: they got a dirty lil secret .....
China cuz, don't they possess a big ole bomb?
Definately not America, Over 18,000 of our troops have been wounded and 2,500 killed in this oil war. Our troops will still be recouping in ten years and our country will be totally exposed and vulnerable. Not to mention the state of our education in this country. With more schools doing block sessions instead of straight class periods through the whole year for the core classes. And the whole No Child Left Behind thing is a crock of poo-pooh...ugh... don't get me started on our country because if I don't think about I can still love this country .
