You can try the local computer shops for a used or refurbished one. If you stay local rather than sending for one you at least have local support in case of problems and you should get some kind of warrenty.

I went ahead and financed a cheap laptop thru dell. They have awesome financing. I am paying about 20 a month

go to your local pub sit down have a few pints, after a while one or two local shoplifters will come in , have a chat with them tell them what you want , about an hour later you will have a new laptop for 50 quid. easy aint it

laptop prices have crashed in last few years and should'nt be a problem getting a new one even
checkout if a mobile celeron suits u'r purpose ... as u said .. university ...
