What is the worst vacation you've ever taken?

When I was about 10, my aunt and uncle invited our family to come to Tampa, FL. My dad was notoriously cheap, and the only thing that made him agree to it was that my aunt picked up the airfare. (I have no idea how he managed to get her to do that.)

Once there, because my dad would not spring for a hotel, all six of us stayed at their mobile home in a retirement community. Nice enough as those things go, but far too small. To make matters worse, we did a lot of touring around the area. You guessed it, my dad would not pay for a rental car. So all six of us were packed into my uncle's Toyota hatchback. Since the hatchback only seated five, I was crammed in behind the rear seat. It was August, and the air conditioning couldn't keep up, especially back where I was, under the glass, in the hot sun. One day my aunt and my mom dug up some wild cactuses to take home, and put them in the back with me. I passed out from the heat and rolled over onto the cactuses. It took an hour to get all the cactus spines out of my back.

We did get to go to Disney World, which was pretty new back then. But the car ride from Tampa to Orlando was hellish, and we spent most of our time waiting in line. It wasn't worth the trip.

To this day I don't like vacations. If I do go, I go in style - five-star hotels, luxury rental cars - all because of the experience in Tampa that year.

I find it hilarious that 2 out of five answers complained about Florida being involved in their worst vacation experiences. I live in Florida, and the ten years that I've been here have been the longest and most hellish of my life. The heat is unbearable, not to mention the alligators, snakes, and mammoth spiders roaming around everywhere. Every vacation I've ever taken has been incredible, however.

Echuca, Victoria, Australia. It took us nearly 5 hours to get there (Tour Bus), then spent a terribly hot 3 hours by the dried up river bed, slowly cruising along the murky river. We saw nothing but dried trees, shrubs and some old river boats, moored by the side. Notwithstanding the flies, all around us. It was summer. ..... Then we were ushered into an old warehouse by the riverside to view the history of Echuca and to listen to some stories of old. The old warehouse was so hot and stuffy. They didn't even provide fans to cool the place down as that would spoil the 'historical' feel, I suppose. Then it was time to go back to MELB, another 5 or so hours. By the time we reached the city, we were tired of the journey and felt cheated. The brochures painted a very nice picture of the place.

I don't think I ever have taken a bad vacation. Life is what you make it.
