If you start in FL, you cant go wrong. South Beach, Ft Lauderdale, Daytona and Clearwater are all great and for all different reasons. So Cal is cool (Santa Monica, Zuma) and there are some awesome beaches all over Hawaii. Stay away from the NE unless you go to Cape Cod/Nantucket/Martha's Vineyard in the summer.

The Brunswick County beaches of North Carolina are great, Holden Beach in particular, which was ranked #8 recently.

I think the best beach I have ever been to is on St. John. That is in the US Virgin Islands and not in the continental US but have been to hawaii and several other beaches and like the remoteness of St. Johns

Caladesi Island in Dunedin Florida is beautiful. It is consistently rated in the Top Ten beaches in the US. It has an amazing nature walk on the island. Its wonderfully preserved and not too touristy. The sand is very nice too.
