Aside from scaring the elderly and buying all of your clothes at the same store (HotTopic) what is so awesome about being a goth freak? Let's enlighten the conservatives...

Goth is cool because it's eternal. I know someone will probably laugh at me for saying this, but it's been around and will be around. From the Rennaisance on every major cultural movement in western history has been accompanied by a darker subculture (see the book "Gothic" by Richard Davenport-Hines for a better explanation of this). Long before modern "goth" developed out of the punk movement in the late '70s/early '80s there were people who thought differently- people who were more aware of poetry, their own mortality and the darker sides of human nature. The art of Pinaresi, the writings of Poe, the weird labors of alchemists and occult philsophers all point to this "proto-goth" subculture.

Goth is cool for me because it survives (even as the people who love it die- both literally and metaphorically). It not only survives culturally in the larger world but within me as well. When I was 12 I was the way you say- shopping at Hot Topic and scaring old people. As I grew up I realized that goth is much deeper than that. It's not even so much about wearing black or listening to this one band- goth is a state of mind. Now I'm 22. I have to dress "business casual" for work but I try to do it with a gothic flair. I'm still accepted by the larger gothic community- another nice thing is that goths tend to be pretty open-minded.

So yeah- that's what's cool about us. We've been around for a while and are diverse and accepting.

Rock on.

first thing,if you are so called goth you are not a freak, you are just different from all the other people,it's all right then if i say :all the rapper freaks speak up,or all the pop start freaks speak up..no one in this world have the same taste, but some people like you can't understand that,is it so difficult to accept other people..if Goth's wanna be Goth's let them be..learn to live in peace..and if you don't have something good to say about people, don't say a word

I cherish older people and rarely shop at Hot Topic (want to look at some of my older questions?) and am somewhat conservative myself. I am what I am because it suits my personality and tastes, and I really don't go out of my way to offend people. But really, are you tring to get a rise out of Mall Goths or the real goths?

Goth was cool till I found that I could make my own genre and be me while still being morbid and 'gothy'.
I dislike that emos call themselves goth though.........still I do not call myself goth no more........I call myself 'me'.
