There was an old movie from the 50s about a haunted house, can't remember the name but not the Vincent Price movie. You never saw the ghosts so never knew when they were just suddenly going to attack.
The Exorcist, if seen in 1974 when it first came out, was the scariest ever. That movie messed me up for a long time.
