Great Irish Famine (1740-1741) due to unseasonble bad weather resulted in poor crops.

Many Scots Irish Protestants moved to America before 1776, settling especially in frontier areas of Pennsylvania, Virginia and the Carolinas. Much of the South also shows their historic imprint.

Potato Famine....fungal infection in the potato crop.....

During and after the Irish potato famine (or Great Famine (An Gorta Mór)) of 1845-1849, millions of Irish Catholics came to North America. Many arrived in Canada on disease-ridden ships referred to as coffin ships. Some of them remained there, especially in Toronto and Ontario, and became Irish-Canadians; others moved to the United States. Between 1820 and 1860, one third of all immigrants to the United States were Irish Catholics, and in the 1840s, they comprised nearly half of all immigrants

It may have been an Irishman who discovered America!

St. Brendan born in County Kerry, Ireland. The Annals of Inisfallen record his birth as being in the year 486
"Brendan still figures high on the list of possible discoverers of America, and the search for the mythical St Brendan's Isle, which was certainly one of the factors that inspired the voyages of Christopher Columbus, is alluded to in many studies of medieval maps and in works on the discovery of the New World."

"As the pages that follow will remind readers, the Irish came early – but was St. Brendan the first, or was it Belfast's William Ayers aboard ship with Columbus?"

"William Ayers, an Irishman undoubtedly familiar with English activities, sailed with Columbus on the Santa Maria. In 1497"

Passenger ships
"St. George" of England, sailed from Portsmouth on 7th. October 1677, to Maryland, via Waterford, Ireland." Many Irish names on the passenger list.

There were Irish coming in almost from the get go. Many were soldiers, convicts, or others sent here. The big push was in the 1840's with the potato famine, and continued throughout the 19th century.
