The leaf referred to here is in the context of a book. A leaf is another name for page. Turning over a leaf means turning over to a new page.
Turning over a NEW leaf means turning to a page never seen before, i.e. changing the personality of a person to something new and becoming a totally different and (generally) better person.

I think "Mom Knows Everything" said it best, it's like I have to work on " turning over a new leaf" when it comes to getting annoyed with some of the questions and answers I read on this site...the first sentence on my new page (leaf) should say "don't let the small stuff annoy you so much....."

I think it's comparing to a leaf (page) of a book... A new page = a new beginning. Or it may even compare to the new leaf of a tree... New leaves suggest a new term of life for a tree. Not sure when or where the phrase originated though.

If you're talking literally, it means you are going outside, waiting under a tree for a leaf to fall, and when it falls, you are turning it over! =P

It's a reference to turning a new page....like in a notebook, or diary...a new page would be blank, and therefore would represent a fresh start. It has nothing to do with plant leaves.

As the seasons change so do the days of our lives...............................

(I know it's world turns but THAT didn't fit the question.heehee)

I think it is about the "tree" (you) delevoping new leaves (changes).
the old leaf that was there is dead and gone.
