I live in a dorm, of a Comunity College in Ny. They soposedly checked my garbage and want to charge me with some rediculous charge due to bad disposal, because they "found" my name in the garbage bag (Inside) in some paper. I thought it was iligal for someone else to be looking around in the garbage.

I would say it is legal to go through the garbage but who would want to? Unless, of course, some fool is trying to steal your identity or something.

I saw something on 20/20 or 48 hours about this Mexican American couple who collected tin cans, cardboard, plastics and glass from peoples trash. Can't remember if it was California or Arizona but they put their kids through college in this country and did very well at making lots of money doing that kind of work. It was like a job to them

I would not want to do something like that because you would need a very good nose. It is too nasty and filthy and I am afraid I would get sick all over the place.

Anyway, I hope I answered your question.

If the can or bag of garbage is still sitting in front of your door, or on your lawn, then yes it is illegal.
As said in another answer however if its in another persons trash bucket.. then no.. too late its gone.. not yours anymore!

Learn to rip up all your personal infomation into tiny little pieces or buy a shredder.. you are lucky this was only a bill they came after you for. Think if they had found something with your Social Insurance Number... there goes your credit furture!!!

Nope, sorry, it is not illegal to go through garbage. Once it leaves your residence it is considered "in the public domain" Police, paparazzi, and identity thieves use this tactic for gathering information. Really scary.

I think it is legal or illegal should be in line with regulations. The regulation should not against wit laws.So maybe in your collrege there is an internal regulation of garbage You obey it or you can suggest an amendment as you like .

it's not legal....unless you threw a bad of trash in someone else's dumpster or trash can. if you have a garbage can of your own, on your property, someone is not allowed to go through it, it's still techinically your property. If you toss something is a public trash can, it's fair game.

once it is at the curb..it is 'public domain" and free to be searched. You shouldn't be silly enough to disposse of garbage in an illegal manner. Especially when you have stuff in there to id you.

Yes its legal once you throw something out its no longer invasion of privacy to go through it.That's how police can get DNA from criminals that have thrown out things they have eaten and drank from.
