I think some of you might have the wrong idea of what Superman is really about. :)

Joelsgrl: I can understand how he may look childish, but that's only appearences. If you had more exposure to Superman, you'd see more of what he really represents. The metaphor is what's important in Superman. Instead of other characters that only have powers and the big question is if they're going to win or not, Superman is more about the moral implications and teaches children and even moreso adults how to be a hero themself. Really, the character is extremely complex and insightful, which is why he has been an inspiration my who life. Superman is what spawned the entire comic genre which is about a hundred billion dollar industry, and that type of capital can not be reached looking only to children. You should check the movie out. It might show you something about the character.

What's funny about this question is that I don't like Superman in the comics all that much. I only read Superman/Batman but that's because of Batman. However I love all the tv shows and movies.
I have to agree with Anna that he is too super. And I agree with you that he is a moral compass. However he hasn't always been that way. When he first appeared he injured and even killed people. During WW 2 he fought Nazis. It wasn't until later that he became the "Boy Scout" he is now.
He also couldn't fly at first. He could jump really far though, that's where the whole "able to leap tall buildings in a single bound" thing came from. Other powers were developed over time as well. When new writers came on to the books they would add new things the end result being what we have today.

He's too...well...super. Most other super heroes have some sort of character flaw--Batman tends to go a little overboard in his vigilantism, Spiderman constantly struggles with the whole "with great power comes great responsibility" thing, etc. Superman just seems to be too much of a boyscout. He annoys me.
However, on the cartoon network Justice Leage show, they actually do a really good job of making his character 3-dimensional, unlike the comics. I don't know if I'll ever like him, but it's a start.

TOO super??? Please. I STOPPED reading and following Superman in 1985 BECAUSE they made him so UN-super. And the world NEEDS a moral compass; a big, blue boyscout. But, now a host of people can kick Supes a**. Boooooring. I want ONE guy that I can always count on to win, no matter WHAT. Until DC reverses the travesty that was Crisis on Infinite Earths, I'm down and on the side.
