Walter was a wonderful human being and he was well loved by many and missed. Yeah I believe he's with the Lord in Heaven. During his career I don't believe anyone ever trained harder or had more determination than Walter, He would fight for every yard and a true great. A friemd of mine gave me a Wheaties box with Walter's picture on it that I love. Rest in Peace Walter.

I just got a chill reading that. I am a diehard Lions fan but always enjoyed watching Walter play. I can remember being in an airport with my brother on our way to grab a flight home to MI from FL and seeing on the TV's how Walter Payton had passed away. I vividly remember stopping in my tracks to watch the TV (It was on CNN) to find out how and why.
Just a tragic early ending to a wonderful human being and fantastic NFL RB,

If Walter Payton had a decent front line his first 5 or 6 seasons he would have had over 20,000 rushing yards..he was a great RB and yes Barry was awesome as well

Walter was a wonderful guy. He cared about people. I'm happy to report his university (Jackson State University in Jackson, Mississippi) recently opened an entire physical education and sports complex on campus. It's filled with the latest exercise equipment and training facilities. It is a wonderful place.

Sweetness would have been proud.

That also means it's been almost seven years since Barry Sanders retired. How that for losing the 2 greatest running backs in history in the same year :(

I know - it is sad and amazing how time flies. His death anniversary is November 1st so we still have a couple months to go before his anniversary is upon us.

I had the great fortune of meeting him because I live in the Chicago area and he lived and worked in Arlington Heights - a suburb of Chicago - and he was the best. He made you feel so good and important talking to him. I have never met a more considerate, caring, decent, honest and awesome guy than him.

Walter 'Sweetness' Payton was a one-of-a-kind running back.I doubt that another could or would take his place.
