I don't think Americans are interested in it because there is no brutality, not much blood (except with the fans), no fighting among the players. The movement in soccer is constant and it is a grueling game, but it is more of a game and a [sport] than it is a battle, and this is not understood in this country. I would like to see our football players, our baseball players, our basketball players go up against soccer players in some type of stamina competition to see who are the fittest.
I'm not saying that any of the American made sports require no skill, because they do, but in American football you have a huge person going out onto the field to face a great big long line of other huge persons to get beat on, pushed around, kicked, pounced on, slammed to the ground by other huge person or persons for about 10 minutes, and then go sit down; in baseball, you have a guy who goes out, tries to hit a ball and if he succeeds, he gets to run around the bases and goes and sits down, while the other team is in the outfield for the inning and then they get to go sit down; in basketball, it's basically the same thing, the guys run up and down a court and shoot baskets, and they go sit down and rest; soccer is constant motion and I guess it takes too much concentration to appreciate the game.

There is a small but growing population interested in the World Cup. As our youth grow and play more soccer (as we call it), they become more interested in watching it. I was at a bar where half of the TVs were tuned to world cup action.

i think many americans aren't. i'm not sure why. maybe because marketers haven't quite capitalized on it yet. my dad thinks this is so because you can't really show commercials during the games like in other sports, which have the opportunities for commercials with timeouts and such. soccer is very fast paced and not conducive to commercials. so from a business standpoint it is a tricky sport. i think on a more grassroots level though, soccer is popular in local/youth organizations.

Absolutely! Though I don't think it's as big of a deal in North America as it is in Europe or Latin America. I want to know the results, but I'm not interested in crowding into a bar with a bunch of loud people and having my personal space invaded.
Interest has gone up in recent years.

No. All the late night comedians are making jokes of it. On Letterman he was giving the top 10 reasons you're obsessed w/ FIFA and # 1 was "you are not American" o rsomething like that lol. No, no one here cares about soccer.

They are interested but they don't even come close to how much all the other countries are interested in the world cup. There is no excitment or anything even or their own team.
