The old rule of thumb used to be between $2 and $3 per gallon tank size but I have seen tanks cheaper and more expensive. Would depend on are you buying just a tank or the hood and hood light too and the stand?? Also is this tank glass or arcylic??
Petsmart would be a place to start or just google aquarium tank prices to see if you can find an average.

40 gallons is not a standard tank size, more than likely would be a hex tand or a bow front tank which will bump the price up substantially. Also when buying "specialty" tanks, you end up having to purchase the stand that goes with it to give the tank proper suport as to not end up having preasure cracks later on. These type stands usually run more than the tanks, and you would still have to purchase all the hardware to run the tank. standard tank sizes usually run 10-20h-20l-29-55-75-125-150-180-gallons for retangular tanks. bow front run 16-28-30-38-46-60-ect. hex run 10-30-36-44-ect.

Sorry hun unfortunately you are going to have to go and price them yourself, we stay in different parts of the world, but I deffinitely would not pay $350 pounds or dollars for a fish tank. So do yourself a favour go to the petshop's and find them out for yourself. Or get dialing and find out that way. You know in South Africa we would pay about 150 - 300 rands which roughly = $41, and in pounds that would be about 25

It depends on where you get it. At some stores it could be a hundred or so. Or in others relatively cheap. It depends on the seller and the condition of the tank.

If you find a local Freecycle Group in your area you might be able to get one for free. The bigger the group, the better your chances. People have a lot of good stuff on Freecycle.
