You can start with what NOT to pick. Do not pick a song that is familiar because then comparisons will be made to major artists that have performed it.
I would research other broadway musicals (you can do this online) go to Live 365, sign up for free account, search for broadway and listen to some of the stations (many play non-popular and more obsure stuff) Pick a song you do not recognise and one THAT IS IN YOUR KEY. I might suggest a song from "Your a Good Man Charlie Brown" Also check out songs that were introduced by Bernadette Peters or Inga Swenson.

FIrst I would avoid other things that are likely to be popular right now, such as Wicked.

Because Sondheim is such a particular style, you might want to go with something from one of his other shows. The other consideration is whether your voice is high or low.

In general, I would suggest lighter songs:
"The Miller's Son" from A Little Night Music
"Anyone Can Whistle" from the musical of the same name
"Pretty Little Picture" from A Funny thing Happened on the Way to the Forum

it really depends on your range and what role you're going for. if you're a soprano and you're going for either Cinderella or Rapunzel i'd recommend one of the songs Joanna sings in "Sweeny Todd" like "Green Finch and Linnet Bird" it's a really hard song but when done well extremely impressive and not used a lot. Another good song for those parts would be "Soon, Now, Later" from the musical "A little night music" If you're going for the role of the bakers wife [my personal favorite] or the witch i would sing something a little more "alto with a belt." i'd suggest "Mama will Provide" from "Once on this Island" or "Our Story goes On" from the musical "Baby." Lastly, if you're going the young girl Little Red Riding Hood route, sing something really charactery like "Can't say No" from Oklahoma or "Nobody does it Like me" from "Seesaw"

hope that helped....

Well, it depends on what kind of part you are aiming at in that show. If you are wanting one of them ore serious roles, then aim at a serious broadway musical piece. If you are wanting a more light-hearted, funny role, then aim at something more funny. Also, you want to show off not only your talent, but your personality. I have sat through these auditions before and chosen players and I always look more at their personality than their talent. Talent is a necessity, but personality usually goes farther. A person with great talent and no personality would not get anything more than a minor supporting role in my book. It takes alot of personality to play a lead role along with alot of talent. I would suggest finding a song that really reflects who you are and that you can really pour your heart and soul into singing. That is what they will be looking for. To see if you can really express yourself through your character on stage.

most of the female parts in into the woods (which i played red in) are pretty high, try on my own, it has some odd key changes just like into the woods. or tonight from west side story is lovely beautiful show case song but moves fast enough that it doesn't drag.

Day by Day from the musical, Godspell.

Since your voice is deep, it will emphasize that. The song starts off slow and then picks up a bit of speed about mid-way.

I hope this helps.

I love Patsy Cline's "Walking After Midnight," "My Girl" by the Temptations, and of course "Strawberry Wine" (Deana Carter, I think)

If you need a song from a musical, "My Fair Lady" has a number of great songs ("I Could Have Danced All Night," "All I Want")

Sing something from "West Side Story." This is another Stephen Sondheim work.
