An more exact term is URI, Universal Resource Identifier. Such a string defines several items. First the protocol used for data transfer (http: or ftp:). Second, a DNS domain is defined, tehn a machine on taht domain, then a website on that machine, then a page (or some code), on that website. This information is parsed and interpreted by the browser.

Uniform Resource Locator. It's the internet adress of any resource from a computer, to a web page, to a printer, any device.

It's like: www.yahoo.com

that's a url, or a more complicated:

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/;_ylt=...
