I've always understood it was just the name of the band. Steve Winwood was the leader of Traffic and was also a key member of the predecessor band - The Spencer Davis Group - that one is rather more obvious.

Steve Winwood formed Traffic in 1967 after leaving the Spencer Davis Group. The name was coined by drummer Jim Capaldi while standing on the street corner one day watching the cars go by.

it's actually a really funny and interesting story, you would NOT believe it and you'd be so amazed that you'd be telling your freinds for weeks. unfortunately i don't really know it, sorry
