Probably because they have never got to truly "experience" Nascar! It isn't some peoples cup of tea. Me personally, I love Nascar, and don't think it's a hillbilly sport! I would like to see any of the haters go through the strain those drivers go through every week, it's a lot tougher than it looks. Let's send them for a Richard Petty driving experience, I hope Yahoo! is paying!

In my area of the country, NASCAR is considered totally white trash. It is true that it seems to be very popular with the white trash set around here, though I'm sure there are plenty of other people who like it. I think some people look at who they see interested in it and say it must not be that special.
It's difficult for people who don't know anything about cars to understand what goes into a race. It's a lot easier for people to understand sports that require physical prowess of the person involved because people (oddly enough) can understand what goes into being an athlete.

I think people judge everything. I love NASCAR but I didnt' always. My step-father was a huge NASCAR fan and I remember watching races for a few minutes when they were on thinking...."OOOKKK This is boring! Who the heck would be into this??" Then when he told me how NASCAR "works" and how the points work and all that I got really interested in it. People judge things that they don't understand and thats just how this world works. Nothings going to ever change that. Just don't listen to people who are negative about something your interested in. GO DALE JR!!! Brandi =)

A lot of people out West notice that most of the fans and the tracks are from/are in the South...that pretty much takes care of it for them. As unfair as that sounds...
Some don't get going around in a track for 3 hours. Some fans of other racing prefer the Grand Prix style that goes through city streets.
Others see that the fan base and drivers are overwhelmingly White, and that may be intimidating.
Democrats hear that it's a "Red Sport" and automatically rule it out.
Every sport gets stereotyped...some people see soccer and don't get guys on a field kicking a ball around only for the game to end in a tie. It's just a taste thing.

It is becasue the concept seems dumb. Lets drive around in circles, won't that be fun. Thats why its criticized by those who don't ever watch it. I don't find a lot of enjoyment in NASCAR, but its rising in popularity pretty quickly. A lot of the drivers are from california, so it obviously isn't a hardcore redneck sport anymore, though i'm sure most "rednecks" still like the sport. but so do others now.

I agree, People should not judge NASCAR until they watch it and learn the basics about the rules. There is defiantly more to NARCAR racing then turning left and crashes!!!

A lot of folks still think that it is primarily a "redneck" activity too. I don't follow it really closely, but I do enjoy it on occassion. It involves a lot of strategy and guts to pull off a victory in Nascar.

lots of people judge things they are only a little familiar with. i' m old enough to remember when you could race in nascar by getting a car from the dealer, modifying for safety and race it. those were stock cars. a 2-door taurus with a rear drive v8 is not a stock car. the cars are cookie-cutter cars and the drivers are cookie-cutter drivers.

I'm with you. Before dissing a sport, one should take an opportunity to watch a race live. After that, if they don't like what they see, then start talking. But, if they don't back up their statements with substance, then they really haven't tried.

it got a rep for redneck. i agree it takes a lot of skill to control a car going speeds most of us will never drive. you see even more skill when someone does start to lose it and the others are still able to avoid crashing.
