Remember: heat rises; before there was central air, folks would draw the shades on the sunny side of a home, to avoid the green house effect. Many folks even planted trees on the sunny side of a house to create shade, but I can't imagine you have twenty years to wait to be cooled off. They would also close all the windows in the house except one in the attic and place a fan in the attic window drawing the heat out of the house. Then you go to the lowest place in the house usually the cellar or basement and open a door that would allow the cool air to be drawn up from the basement to replace the warm air being drawn out by the fan in the attic. This is a whole house effect not just a room.
To make a room cooler I suggest a few posters of what you really care about most, you'd be surprised how much attention that will draw! Have fun.

Depending on how many windows there are in the room, you should cover them in dark curtains. The darker a room is the cooler it will be. Windows should only be left open to let the sunshine in during the winter when it is cold.

If you use low wattage light bulbs (If you need them on during the day) or no bulbs it reduces your heat. The higher the wattage the more heat it puts out. Get shades for the sunny side of your house and use them during the sunny part of the day. If you use fans like I do...have at least two pulling to the same direction in seperate rooms, but in line of each other. if you use a window fan have it blowing out..pulling the hot air out and the cool air through from another fan or fans....Cel
