If your computer is still running Windows 95 that means it is far too old to be running XP. You MAY be able to install Windows XP but it most certainly would slow your system down to a crawl. If you want to run Windows XP, I agree with the other people that have said to get a new computer. It would not be worth it to install XP on your current system. Nor would it be worth upgrading to be able to support Windows XP.

I see someone has posted the minimum requirements for Windows XP. Rest assured if you install Windows XP on a system with just the bare minimum, it will be SLOOOOOOW. It will be slow at doing everything and I do mean everything, including the mundane tasks. If all you meet is the minimum it is my VERY STRONG reccomendation that you do not install Windows XP.

Hi!
I'm sorry to tell you that you can't do that. The reason is that Windows 95 uses the FAT (file allocation system) and Windows XP uses the NTFS filing system. If you put an operating system using NTFS on top of an operating system using FAT, the files will get all messed up and your computer won't be able to find anything. If you want to upgrade your Windows 95 computer, try Windows 98 or Windows 98SE
(second edition). DO NOT put Me (Windows
Millennium on your computer because Me has the NTFS filing system and will mess up your files to that you can't find anything either just like XP will.

To get your computer back to the Windows 95 settings, you will have to format your drive and reinstall Windows. This is quite complicated for some people and I would not recommend doing it if you have never done it before. I do know of 2 computer forums where you can go and post this answer. Someone will help you. They may have a solution that you could live with. The names of the forums are: Suggest a Fix.com and Tech Support Guy.org. The URLs (uniform resource locators) are www.techguy.org and www.suggestafix.com.

It is very doubtful that any computer with Windows 95 installed meets the requirements that XP specifies.

At best, it would run quite slow. XP requires quite a bit more MEMORY, DISK SPACE and CPU speed than 95 does.

So, considering you have to buy XP and more memory, and a larger disk drive, etc you'd be better off buying a computer package with XP already installed from Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. We've seen them as low as $299 (after rebates) and that usually includes a monitor and sometimes a printer as well....

Unless you have a good reason to want WinXP, the upgrade isn't worth the hassle.
To run WinXP smoothly, you'll also want a P4 PC with 512MB of ram. If your system is anything less - and I suspect it is, or you'd already have Win98/ Win2000 installed - stay well away from XP!
Just get whatever is current when you upgrade your computer: WinXP for the next year, and Windows Vista after that.
