For some people it is pathological...they are stunted emotionally and intellectually. It's sad because those people will probably never enjoy a normal life or a normal relationship based on trust and mutual respect, they will only have drama and pain....they will cause pain.

People lie for many reasons. Some people are so unhappy with their lives, bored or just unsatisfied that they will lie reflexively just to make themselves seem more important. Some people lie complusively because they need mental help and can't control the urge to do it. For some people, lying is a game. They do it to see if they can avoid being caught. Some people don't care if they get caught. People who have certain mental illnesses will lie, knowing they will be caught because the lying is a symptom of their problem but most people lie, even knowing that they will be caught because there is some end goal... a better job, a pay raise, a new girlfriend/boyfried, they were caught cheating on the old girlfriend/boyfriend, etc. People lie, taking the risk of getting caught because they think they see a way to better their situation that outweighs the risk of the consequences.

A better question is "Why do people have an expectation that other people shouldnt lie?"

Some people are mentally ill and actually believe the lies they tell, they can't tell reality from the truth. Others like drug addicts will lie even if they get caught with your wallet in their hands hoping they can convince you that it got there by accident because they will do anything to keep on using. There are a million reasons for lying, some lie because they are in a repressive environment and have to lie to survive.

People that lie simply don't take the time to think it through. In fact, when questioned, they lie again. The real problem with lying, is that they don't get their facts straight.

It seems that it is harder to MAKE UP your own story, then just go with the TRUTH.

The best writers write from their personal experience, and what they know as TRUE. Poor writers have half-baked lies and do not investigate the TRUTH.

That is a good question, my feeling is that its an attemp for one last chance NOT to get caught. Liars unfortunately do not stop even when they do get caught.

Maybe they get some kind of rush from lying. Or maybe they actually think they are telling the truth. It is a good question - the pathology of lying is pretty interesting.
