Very good question.
Let me follow that up with another:
When you hear a song for the first time, and then later hear it from another artist (either the original band/singer or a cover band/singer), which do you like better - the first one you heard or the second one?
Back to your question.
I grew up listening to radio.
Morning, noon and night...all the time!
Later, friends would share their records (remember those round, black vinyl discs that would spin on a turntable?).
This was cool, because a lot of friends had older brothers or sisters in college and I'd get to hear stuff that local stations did NOT play.
Then came MTV.
WOW!
Words, music AND visuals!
Then, artists began writing to the video and the music began to suffer.
MTV slowly changed from "music" television to "marketing" television...placing their brand on everything, from clothes to who-knows-what.
It became too commercial.
I quit watching and subscribed to CMJ New Music Monthly and would get a new CD each month full of new sounds and info about new groups.
Then, the Internet got cool with streaming radio stations.
Mega-WOW!
I could tune in the latest stuff from Europe, India...where ever!
So how do I start liking songs?
When I hear something new, original and catchy...be it the Afro Celt Sound System or Under The Influence of Giants...I'll probably buy it off iTunes.
Maybe other people like what I like, maybe not.
I don't care what everyone else listens to.
I never was into disco...everyone else was.
I never was into rap...tons of people are.
I never got into Britney Spears...and quite a few people did (no pun intended!).
Too bad good radio is limited.
Everything broken down into specific genres (rock, alt-rock, metal-rock, etc...).
There are still very cool radio stations out there that play everything from the Beatles to Jimmy Eat World (KEXP is a way cool station that I listen to on line).
I suppose I'm rambling...so I'll shut up now.

I'm not a really huge music fan as most of my friends and family are...However, my friends tell me all the time that I like whatevers in heavy rotation on the radio and that's soooooo true...For instance, I hardly buy cds, but most of my friends do alll the time...There may be a song or 2 on the cd that they may want me to hear and most of the time I hate it. However, I can hear that same song rotating on the radio months later and I love it! My friends actually have to remind me that it's the same song they had me listen to months before. It's crazy, but so true...So, sorry for rambling, but I start liking songs when they play on the radio...Thanks for you time...Thats all folks...lol

I usually get hooked on songs at the live shows. The ones that they can really open up and explore and find new things in are the ones I like best. Often, you cannot determine this from the 3.5 minute studio version that gets radio/video rotation.

it starts with the beat. Most popular songs have a 60 bpm (beat per minute) or a 120bpm. This causes toe tapping and hand clapping. ( No kidding.... look into it ) then it's the lyrics. The song must have a message that appeals to the masses.

when they play it on the radio, actually.
but, there are songs that so catchy u can like it the 1st time u hear it. and there are some that take times, not really catchy cuz u hear it over n over, but we fall in to it in the end. that song will last longer, i think.

You have to find music that means something to you. You will never start to like something that you cant relate to! You may find that you dont like what "everybody" else likes.

you like a song when you first hear it. if you don't like it, youdon't listen to it anymore so you don't watch the video or care that everybody else likes it. at least, that's how it works for me:-)

i usually don't listen to the stuff on the radio & mtv, vhi or cmt...i usually get new stuff by word of mouth and research. i know i love it when i catch myself singing it in my head througout the day.

the more something becomes familiar the more it is liked so often if you hear a song over and over you like it more than one you are unfamiliar with
