Having been a big fan of the original Omen movies, I was apprehensive about the remake. Much of it is shot-for-shot the same as the original, which almost lulls you into thinking you're watching the old movie, so when something IS different, it jerks you out of your seat a bit. Liev Schreiber and Julia Stiles really do succeed in investing the couple with a modern sensitivity, which gave the whole dynamic something more than a 'horror movie' formula - it almost becomes a study in relationship collapse at times, which is a brave thing to do. Solid performances from most of the supporting cast add structure to the walls of this world. The only major problems are some schlocky shocking moments, that actually made me laugh because they broke the atmosphere, the inability of the new Damien to go convincingly ape - he looked rather like any tantrumming five year old would look, rather than paralysed with fear - and the ending, which although gaining soemthing from this Damien's ability to speak some words, was all over and done with too quickly to let the horror of it sink in.
On balance, worth seeing, and an interesting movie in itself because of what Schrieber and Stiles bring to it, but as good as the original? Nah, afraid not.
