No way.Sweetness was a much better football player than Smith. Smith had decent players around him most of his career,The Bears only had a few good years and dominated on the defense. At one time the bears played without a QB, They just hiked the ball to Walter. If you put Smith with the Bears and Payton with the cowboys you wouldnt be asking this question.

Emmit's numbers were better, but he played on much better teams than Walter. Of course, Emmit was past his prime when he went to the Cardinals, but look how his production dropped after leaving the Cowboys. Who knows how many yards Walter could have had with the O-line Emmit had in Big D. A better question in my mind is how many yards Barry Sanders would have had if he didn't retire so early.

No never. Walter was the real deal and the best all around football to ever play the game. Emmit had a great line in front of him - name me a couple of the star offensive linemen from the Chicago Bears from 1977 to 1982 - and when did Walter rush for 275 yards and when was he MVP.

Payton....he performed on several teams that without him may have been doormats, Emmit, while brilliant as well, had the luxury of being on of the greatest pro offenses ever that was not one-dimensional like most of the teams Walter played on. For the exception of Jim Brown, Walter Payton may have been the most complete running back in the game's history.

I guarantee that if Walter Payton had the same offensive line that Emmitt Smith had, the record would not have been broken. Payton could have easily moved beyond the 20,000 yard mark for his career. I do not take away anything from Smith's skills on the field, but that O-line practically gave him 4-5 yards to start off with on every rushing play since Dallas's philosophy on linemen was "bigger is better" (check average weights for their linemen, it was staggering).

While stats do talk, it must be remembered that Emmitt had more games played, so he did stand a better chance of breaking that record.

Walter Payton will always be the best RB in NFL history.

Emmit's o-line was amazing. I dont really know much about walter besides he is an all-time great. I'll have to jump on the bandwagon and say Walter.

no, emmit had a dynasty. the cowboys had a great line, plus great quarterback, recievers, and tight end to help keep the pressure of him. and their defence was great which gave him more chance to be on the field. walter payton was great with an okay bears team. the bears was nowhere close to being the dynasty the cowboys was. you saw what happened when emmit didnt have his line. he became an average runningback, then with the cards he back was on the bottom as far as stats goes

It's close but I would have to say no. Walter garnered most of his yards on mediocre Bear teams. Emmitt Smith had one of the great OLs in NFL history blocking for him, a HOF QB in Troy Aikman, plus potential HOFr Michael Irvin at wideout along with the dangerous Alvin Harper. Emmitt was still a great back though.

statisticaly emmit is better than walter. But I think walter is a better player emmit relied on his line and his moves.Walter relied on running people over.
