I've just rebooted my Windows Xp because there was a virus infection. I'm not able to play any music files in Windows Media Player or in other application. I get an error saying no sound device is detected. I'm sure my speaker is connected and is in a good working condition. Please help me out.

Since the sound was working at one point we can only assume that in some manner the soundcard's drivers have been uninstalled or corrutted. Goto CONTROL PANEL. In CONTROL PANLE SWITCH TO CLASSIC VIEW and open up SYSEM (Or Right click on MY COMPUTER and select PROPERTIES).

Click the HARDWARE tab on the window that appears and then click the DEVICE MANAGER button. If there is an yellow exclimation point next to an unknown item, or in an item under sound , video and game controllers then the driver is corrupted or missing.

If you are making use of onboard sound you should be able to find the driver at the website of your motherboard manufacturer. If you have the cd that came with your motherboard you can try to re-install it from the cd. It is very difficult to tell you which driver you need with out being able to see the board or knowing the model number.. Download Sisoft Sandra Lite and use the mainboard module(hardware tab and open mainboard, in the field model is the model information and manufacturer is at manufacturer) to check which board you have.

If you can't find your motherboard manufcaturers website goto http://www.driversguide.com and search for audio drivers there.

you can find the link to download sisoft sandra 2007 lite at
http://www.sisoftware.net/

I hope that send ou in the right direction, you are welcome to mail me for futher assistance.

Start / Settings / Control panel
Click on the System icon
Go to the Hardware tab
Click on Device Manager
Look for the section of listing that has the Sound devices. Click the little + in front to expand it.
Look to see if any of the devices have a red x or a yellow ! in front of them. If so, something is conflicting with the sound card.
Right click on your sound card, and uninstall it. (You will not hurt anything by doing this.)
Reboot the PC and it should redetect the card. Since the drivers are already on your PC from before, you should be working again.

My best guess is that you need to reinstall your sound card drivers. If Windows Media Player says "no sound device detected" either the drivers are not installed or there is no sound card installed at all. As I said, you probably need to reinstall the drivers.
