A point that is reached which gives the most favourable set of circumstances. It is often a trade -off between conflicting variables where, before the optimum point is reached you do not have the best possible outcome but, to go beyond the optimum point you have diminishing returns.

It's taking the best of something.
This is the story of a very famous Professor who was asked to explain, in a seminar, to the best ingeneers of this world, to give them a lecture about "optimization" in half an hour.
Since the topic was hard and could not be covered in such a small amount of time, the professor decided to design his class differently this time.
He arrived in the classroom with a big jar made of glass, and put it on his desk, in front of his students, all ready to learn from him.
Then he put a bag of big stones on the desk and filled the jar with the stones.
Then he asked his audience:"Is this jar full?"
The audience said "Yes sir"
And he said "No, I'm sorry"
Then he put another bag on the desl that was full of sand, and put sand in the jar, over the stones, and asked again:
"Is this jar full?"
The students started to understand the thing and looking at his bottle of water and said, "No!".
Indeed, the old professor took his bottle of water and finished filling the jar with water. Then he said "what's your conclusion now?"
And one of the smart ingeneers said "The conclusion is that to optimize your schedule you need to put your most important meetings first, and then your secondary work, etc..."
The Professor nodded and said "No, the conclusion is that you have to decide first what are the big stones of your life and put them first: is it love?your family and friends? or is it power and money? glory? and then chose about what's the sand of your life and put last what has a minor importance."
