Yes, they were. And they still have the greatest culture in the world - Vedic culture. If they do not take advantage of it they will be most unfortunate. If you are an Indian you should know that you should make your life perfect and successful first and then share it with others less fortunate.
P.S. I presume that by Indians you mean the people of India, not the native american Indians

If you refer to the native american indian..in a sense they may be..they lived a simple life..with their motives being sustenance, family, and safety/security. They only took what they needed to live off of, believed in family, loyalty, and love. Sometime 'smarts' isn't just about intelligence.

one cannot determine that an entire group of people are the "Smartest"
