Dorothea Dix was tireless in exposing mistreatment of those who were diagnosed with mental illness or who were institutionalized in the 19th century. She helped effect change for thousands of people. She has been someone I have looked up to since high school, even though I have not followed her profession. See the link below for more information.

Dorothea Dix was an advocate for treating the mentally ill humanely. She was the leader of the moral movement; a philosophy on which most mental institutions were built starting in the mid-1800s. She believed that the mentally ill that were hospitalized should receive better treatment that was also more economical. She urged that special facilities be built to house the mentally ill. In part due to her efforts, the number of mental health facilities increased from 4 in 1830 to 75 in 1880.

Dorothea Dix fought for better treatment of mentally ill persons. She first became aware of the delporable conditions of the mentally ill when she went into an institution to volunteer. She herself became depressed at one point and went to a home in England to recover. She was able to rest and thought a lot about her situation and envisioned a model similar to her own experience where the mentally ill could go to recover. She lobbied and eventually saw the opening of the first insane asylum. However, it eventually morphed into something other than what she envisioned and once again became a storing place for the mentally ill and many negative connotions were associated with the asylum.

She also spoke in front of men in the government about her findings. I think maybe the Massachusetts legislature but not certain. This was a big dal in the 19th century because women were not allowed to give speeches or testify in front of mixed audiences.
