My old house came with wireless access, but now I'd like to hook it up in my new house. I have the USB connection to pick up the signal, but I'm not sure what else I need... a phone line, a router???

First - you do not want to mess with a wireless connection on a dial-up. You'll need a broadband connection - DSL or Cable (I prefer cable - it is faster, especially when you talk wireless) - once you have the broadband connection - you will need a wireless router. I am not a big fan of Netgear products - but since you already have the USB receiver - we'll go with that. Get a Netgear WGR614 Wireless Router - try Tigerdirect.com they are one of the cheapest:

You will run an Ethernet cord from the DSL/Cable modem to the connection marked 'Internet' on the back of the router (it comes with easy to use instructions) - From the '1' slot on the back of the router - run a second ethernet cable to your PC - after it is all together - start everything up and you should have a wireless connection (if you are using Windows XP - the system will tell you there is a connection available - if you are using a different system - follow the instructions that come with the router).

Let's start at the wall. You are either using Cable or Phone. If Cable, then you are using Broadband. If Phone, you are using ADSL. Next, you need a router. Preferrably one that is 10/100Mbs and supports 802.11b and/or 802.11g. Do not bother getting the 802.11n b/c a standard has not been approved by the FCC yet and therefore some products may not work with others. You will have to load software on your host PC to support the new router. It sounds like you already have a transceiver to plug into your USB. Just make sure it matches your router. If you have XP on your PC the "Add Hardware Wizard" should take care of loading it. If not, you will have to install the driver software yourself. Now, You will need to add your network onto any PC you are connecting to your wireless network. To do this, go to "control panel" then "network & internet connections" then "wireless network setup wizard". Follow the prompts. You will need to give all PCs unique names. Your PC will assign a WEP address to your network. This is a security code that must be downloaded to all PCs on your network. It is best to copy the wireless info from your host PC to a USB memory stick and download this to all other PCs on your network. You will be prompted to do this by the wizard. Now, if you want to be able access files from other computers on your network, you need to select which files and folders you want to share with other PCs on your network. This is not necessary if you just want to access the internet and not share anything with other PCs on your network. But to do this you need to add folders to the "shared documents" folder on you PC. Hope this helps.

1) You will need an ISP to provide Internet access to your house. This is either cable Internet, DSL, etc.
2) To go wireless, you will need a wireless router which will connect to whatever device your ISP provdes for accessing the Internet.
3) Finally you will need to follow the instructions for setting up the router to talk with both your ISP and your USP connector.

First you need an Internet connection such as DSL or cable modem. You also need a wireless router in order to share the connection wirelessly. Make sure it supports the same standard as your USB adaptor (i.e. 802.11a or 802.11g which is fully compatible with 802.11b). Othewise as long as you select a name brand you should be fine.

You need some kind of broadband. Then you need a wireless router. I have had the most sucess with D-Link G routers. Just the 54 mbps.
