As an employee of an Engineering firm, here's my thoughts.
Architects (as well as Engineers, Contractors, et cetera) are familiar with a variety of codes requried for all sorts of buildings (homes, offices, libraries, and so on).
These codes are very specific and cover a vast array of items. Picture a stack of a dozen phone books. The building codes that we have to deal with on a daily basis easily are a larger stack of books than those phone books.
Architects provide a service that results in a coordinated process throughout the design and construction of a building. They act as a relay between all of the involved parties (the client, the architect, the structural engineer, mechanical engineer, electrical engineer, plumbing engineer, the general contractor, and all of the sub-contractors [plumbing, electrical, ...]. Not to mention the building inspectors involved, equipment manufacturer representatives. Picture a family tree if you will, with all of these parties in constant communication. Now picture yourself trying to coordinate all of them.
That's it in a nutshell. Hope it helps.

An architect will not only design the structure to your preferences, they will ensure that the building is safe and meets all applicable local laws/codes.
By the way, what does this have to do with Arts & Humanities?

Why go to a doctor when you're sick? Why go to a dentist when your teeth hurt?
Architects are trained to build structures. If that's what you need, you use them.

The design includes technical specifications that enable you to control the various elements of construction. One also needs technical specs in order to obtain required building permits
